    Stacked Antiaromatic Porphyrins

    Aromaticity is a key concept in organic chemistry. Even though this concept has already been theoretically extrapolated to three dimensions, it usually still remains restricted to planar molecules in organic chemistry textbooks. Stacking of antiaromatic π-systems has been proposed to induce three-dimensional aromaticity as a result of strong frontier orbital interactions. However, experimental evidence to support this prediction still remains elusive so far. Here we report that close stacking of antiaromatic porphyrins diminishes their inherent antiaromaticity in the solid state as well as in solution. The antiaromatic stacking furthermore allows a delocalization of the π-electrons, which enhances the two-photon absorption cross-section values of the antiaromatic porphyrins. This feature enables the dynamic switching of the non-linear optical properties by controlling the arrangement of antiaromatic π-systems on the basis of intermolecular orbital interactions

    A Novel Magnetic Resonance Quality Assurance Phantom (KMRP-4): Multi-Site Comparison With the American College of Radiology Phantom

    Purpose: To propose a novel standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phantom, hereafter called the Korea Magnetic Resonance Phantom-4th edition (KMRP-4). Its related quality control (QC) assessment protocols and its comparison with the American College of Radiology (ACR) phantom and its QC assessment protocols. / Materials and Methods: Internally, the KMRP-4 phantom is composed of cubic and triangular vessels, brain tissue structures, and a uniform region designed to facilitate a variety of QC protocols. Using magnetic resonance (MR) images of these structures, we quantitatively evaluated a total of 10 parameters, seven from those of existing ACR protocols (i.e., geometric accuracy, high-contrast spatial resolution, slice thickness accuracy, slice position accuracy, image intensity uniformity, percent signal ghosting, and low-contrast object detectability) and three additional parameters for evaluating vessel conspicuity, brain tissue contrast, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) introduced in the KMRP-4 protocols. Twentyt-wo MRI systems of 0.32–3.0 T static magnetic field strength were tested using both ACR and KMRP-4 phantoms. Mann–Whitney U-tests were performed on the seven evaluation items of the ACR method to compare KMRP-4 and ACR methods. / Results: The results of Mann–Whitney U-test demonstrated that p-values were more than 0.05 for all seven items that could be assessed with both ACR and KMRP-4, indicating similar results between the two methods. Additionally, assessments of vessel conspicuity, brain tissue contrast, and SNR using the KMRP-4 method demonstrated utility of the KMRP-4 phantom. / Conclusion: A novel standard phantom and related QC methods were developed to perform objective, observer-independent, and semi-automatic QC tests. Quantitative comparisons of MR images with KMPR-4 and ACR phantoms were performed. Results demonstrated the utility of the newly proposed KMRP-4 phantom and its related QC methods

    Basal cell adenoma and myoepithelioma of the parotid gland: patterns of enhancement at two-phase CT in comparison with Warthin tumor

    PURPOSEEarly enhancement and a washout pattern are reported to be the characteristic imaging features of Warthin tumor (WT). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the enhancement patterns of basal cell adenoma (BCA) and myoepithelioma (ME) of the parotid gland on two-phase computed tomography (CT), compared with WT.METHODSWe retrospectively evaluated two-phase CT examinations of histologically proven 19 BCAs, 12 MEs, and 23 WTs of the parotid gland. In all patients, CT scans were obtained at early and delayed phases with scanning delays of 40 and 180 s, respectively. We measured the attenuation values on each phase of CT scans and calculated washout attenuation and relative percentage enhancement washout ratio. From the data acquired, we statistically compared the enhancing characteristics among three tumor groups.RESULTSBased on the results of washout attenuation and relative percentage enhancement washout ratio, 15 (79%) of 19 BCAs, 9 (75%) of 12 MEs, and 23 (100%) of 23 WTs demonstrated a washout pattern of enhancement on two-phase CT scans. Despite variations of the individual tumors, both parameters revealed no significant difference among three tumor groups.CONCLUSIONBCAs and MEs of the parotid gland frequently show early enhancement and a washout pattern on two-phase CT, which can be indistinguishable from WTs in the majority of cases

    Risk factors for repeated febrile seizures during the same febrile illness

    Purpose We aimed to identify the factors associated with the repeated febrile seizures (RFS), defined as recurrent seizures during the same febrile illness. Methods We reviewed the medical records of children with febrile seizure who visited 4 academic emergency departments from October 2016 through September 2018. Differences were identified in variables regarding clinical and laboratory characteristics between the children with and without RFS. The RFS was the primary outcome. Logistic regression was conducted to identify factors associated with the occurrence of RFS. Results Among 1,551 children, 922 were included in the study, of whom, 198 (21.5%) underwent RFS. Of the children with RFS, 188 (94.9%) underwent the recurrences within the initial 24 hours. Logistic regression showed focal seizure (adjusted odds ratio, 6.67; 95% confidence interval, 2.37-18.82), venous pH 30 minutes (1.90; 1.30-2.78) as the factors for RFS. Conclusion In children with febrile seizure, focal seizure, acidosis, and prolonged postictal state may be independent risk factors for RFS. These findings may be informed to healthcare professionals and parents caring for children with febrile seizure

    Dichotomous role of Shp2 for naïve and primed pluripotency maintenance in embryonic stem cells

    Background : The requirement of the Mek1 inhibitor (iMek1) during naïve pluripotency maintenance results from the activation of the Mek1-Erk1/2 (Mek/Erk) signaling pathway upon leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) stimulation. Methods : Through a meta-analysis of previous genome-wide screening for negative regulators of naïve pluripotency, Ptpn11 (encoding the Shp2 protein, which serves both as a tyrosine phosphatase and putative adapter), was predicted as one of the key factors for the negative modulation of naïve pluripotency through LIF-dependent Jak/Stat3 signaling. Using an isogenic pair of naïve and primed mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), we demonstrated the differential role of Shp2 in naïve and primed pluripotency. Results : Loss of Shp2 increased naïve pluripotency by promoting Jak/Stat3 signaling and disturbed in vivo differentiation potential. In sharp contrast, Shp2 depletion significantly impeded the self-renewal of ESCs under primed culture conditions, which was concurrent with a reduction in Mek/Erk signaling. Similarly, upon treatment with an allosteric Shp2 inhibitor (iShp2), the cells sustained Stat3 phosphorylation and decoupled Mek/Erk signaling, thus iShp2 can replace the use of iMek1 for maintenance of naïve ESCs. Conclusions : Taken together, our findings highlight the differential roles of Shp2 in naïve and primed pluripotency and propose the usage of iShp2 instead of iMek1 for the efficient maintenance and establishment of naïve pluripotency.This work was supported by a grant from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF-2020R1A2C2005914).     Silver nanoparticles modify VEGF signaling pathway and mucus hypersecretion in allergic airway inflammation

    The anti-inflammatory action of silver nanoparticles (NPs) has been reported in a murine model of asthma in a previous study. But more specific mechanisms of silver NPs in an attenuation of allergic airway inflammation have not yet been established. Vascular and mucous changes are believed to contribute largely in pathophysiology in asthma. Among various factors related to vascular changes, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a pivotal role in vascular changes in asthma. Mucin proteins MUC5AC and MUC5B have been implicated as markers of goblet cell metaplasia in lung pathologies. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of silver NPs on VEGF signaling pathways and mucus hypersecretion. Ovalbumin (OVA)-inhaled female BALBc mice were used to evaluate the role of silver NPs and the related molecular mechanisms in allergic airway disease. In this study, with an OVA-induced murine model of allergic airway disease, it was found that the increased levels of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, VEGF, phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) and phosphorylated-Akt levels, and mucous glycoprotein expression (Muc5ac) in lung tissues were substantially decreased by the administration of silver NPs. In summary, silver NPs substantially suppressed mucus hypersecretion and PI3K/HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway in an allergic airway inflammation

    Strong ferromagnetism in Pt-coated ZnCoO: The role of interstitial hydrogen

    We observed strong ferromagnetism in ZnCoO as a result of high concentration hydrogen absorption. Coating ZnCoO with Pt layer, and ensuing hydrogen treatment with a high isostatic pressure resulted in a highly increased carrier concentration of 10(21)/cm(3). This hydrogen treatment induced a strong ferromagnetism at low temperature that turned to superparamagnetism at about 140 K. We performed density functional method computations and found that the interstitial H dopants promote the ferromagnetic ordering between scattered Co dopants. On the other hand, interstitial hydrogen can decrease the magnetic exchange energy of Co-H-Co complexes, leading to a reduction in the blocking temperature.open7
